You can say eg 'I am in my/your home'.

Thanks Clive for the prompt response.

Doesn't any rule govern the usage of prepositions in English? Is it simply idiomatic/non-idiomatic?

Ron

Hi,

It's true that a lot of preposition usage is idiomatic. That's why they are hard to learn, and hard to teach. The good news is that, if you use the wrong preposition, you will still usually be understood.

With regard to 'at home', it seems to me that the issue is not so much about the preposition as about the absence of an article or some other determiner.

CliveIn other words, you should be asking why we can say 'He is at home' but not 'He is at office'.
Very good, Clive![Y] I may be wrong but I think that in many cases a student simply forgets - or "forgets" - to use an article and because of that doesn't pay much attention to them.
