Inarticulate

For a second or two we might have been a group of statues. Then with an inarticulate roar of fury, the prisoner wrenched himself free from Holmes’s grasp, and hurled himself through the window.

What does it mean here? I didn't find out any suitable definition from the dictionaries. Thank you.

I can understand your confusion.

A lion can articulate a roar of fury in grand style.

You can articulate an arpeggio on the harp.

A drawbridge is an articulated bridge.

But an articulate person is a skillful communicator.

Of course he might have articulate hands.

But in this context, as Clive says, it means he's not speaking/articulating

At the risk of beating a dead horse, I'll add another point.
While the word "articulate" (verb/adjective) may often suggest the ability to move with dexterity, and might make us think of the ability to speak with perfect diction; when we say a person is articulate or inarticulate we're not necessarily speaking of audible communication. We usually mean he's able or unable to express himself e
