Vocabulary

in your face, in the arm

So I'm just curious as to which preposition I use for the following case:

I am going to puke in/on your face.

I'm assuming that it's ON because the puke doesn't really go into the face but rather stays on the surface.

But I'm just a bit confused because for the following cases:

Shoot you in/on the face.
Punch you in/on the face.

the correct preposition is IN.

So if I were to clarify, if the verb happens to be penetrating/going into the surface, the preposition is IN, but if the verb conveys the idea of staying on the surface, the preposition is ON.
Is this correct?
