In X grade/year

How dou you say that you're in your first year/grade at the uni/at school?

I'm in the first grade/year.

I'm in first grade/year.

Is there any difference in terminology? Do we use 'grade' for a school and 'year' for a uni or vise versa or there is no difference at all?

Regards,

Valeria
