In WWI the tank stalked the battlefield

In WWI the tank stalked the battlefield

What does the word 'stalk' mean in the above-mentioned sentence? The sentence was mentioned in a program I saw on the History Channel and it was about the history of the tank. I don't think the word can mean 'to pursue prey stealthily'; since tanks were only made in small numbers and they weren't very stealthy in WWI. How I understand it, is that it means the same as 'to sprout up' or 'to come into existence'. However, I can't find a satisfactory definition in any dictionary.
