In what is now or

He was the ruler of the Anatolia, in what is now called Turkey.

Is it correct of me to think the sentence is wrong? Shouldn't it be like I dont need "in" before what is?

It should be either

the Anatolia in what is now Turkey OR

the Anatolia what is now called Turkey

Isn't it? I am confused
