in vs for

What function did music serve humankind as we changed and developed? Certainly, the music of 50,000 and 100,000 years ago is very different from Beethoven, Van Halen, or Eminem. As our brains have evolved, so has the music we make with them, and the music that we want to hear. Did particular regions and pathways evolve in our brains specifically ( ) making and listening to music?

Which should be in the blank, "in" or "for"?

I would say they are both possible, although I like for better.
For would mean in order to, for the purpose of.
In would mean As a result of. It's not the clearest way to say it though.
