'in this setting'?

Hi,

Please have a look at this:

This book contends that everyone of a business's constituents has an important role to play in a contracting economic environment. For example, it will surprise you to read of the important contributions sales people can provide in this setting, as well as the board of directors

=> What's the meaning of 'in this setting' here?

Thank you very much,

Nessie.

The author is speaking of a particular type of business territory, which he calls "a contracting economic environment." This doesn't refer to "contracts," but to "growing smaller."

"In this setting," where the economy is contracting, or getting smaller, instead of growing, these people can make significant contributions.

You may find "growing smaller" a confusing term. Sorry about that. Let's stick with "getting smaller."
