In this sentence, who or whom

I thought it was whom in this sentence because the pronoun is the object of the preposition over...

'Our friendship didn’t blossom till later on due to an upsetting dispute over whom/who won.'

However, Microsoft word marked it as incorrect and said it should be who.

Am I right and microsoft is wrong?

Thanks.

The object of over is the entire relative clause who won. As the relative pronoun acts as the subject of the clause, only who is correct. Microsoft has an imperfect knowledge of English relative pronouns in some other respects, though.

  • It sometimes suggests that that should be used where which is equally correct - albeit less common in AmE.
