In there

Hello,

Let's assume we have the following sentence: Look for it in the cupboard, it should be in there.
What's a role of the preposition "IN" in this sentence and what would the difference be if it was omitted (...it should be there)?

Thanks in advance

  • 'in there' is, at my best guess, an adverbial phrase.
  • My answer to the other part of the question is that the second 'in' is redundant.

Alone, there means at that place. So if you want to characterize the type of place more narrowly, you can add a preposition. In this case there just means that place.

there - at that place
in there - in that place [the place is a container or enclosure]
on there - on that place [the place is a surface]
