in the table vs. on the table/on the wall vs. in the wall

At one time in class, a classmate said that the use of in the table or in the wall is correct according to your intention or what you really want to say. And our teacher refuted saying that grammar books say "on the wall/on the table". What if there is something beneath the wall? and that is exactly what you want to point out? Can we use in the wall?
