In the next day

Hi,

When learning the prepositions of time, I was taught that ' ...on the next day...' is the only correct usage , but I haply came across '...in the next day...' .
In what situations could 'on,in' be used with 'day' ?And would the following sentence be correct with either?
' The boss asked him to do it on/in the next day.'

Thanks.
