“ In the next academic year, to get admitted to a publish high school, a 9th grade students must handle not only Mathematics and Literature but also a set of subjects which can only be revealed in March. Do you think this is a good or bad trend?”

It has been argued that in the next academic year, students are required to submit a set of more than twelve subjects included in the school’s curriculum to give a pass to high school rather than only Mathematics and Literature as before. Although there exists a growing controversy among students and teachers over this new testing method,on the big picture, it offers a myriad of other significant benefits.

On the one hand, the benefits of adopting this testing method will help develop well-rounded students. It is conducive for examiners to have a general assessment of student’s ability. Instead of having traditional focus on two main subjects Mathematics and Literature, one is now required to apply oneselves to swot up on other subjects such as Chemistry, Science, which enables them to grasp a basic knowledge at every field. Vietnamese students will pride themselves on knowing inside out every aspects of life, allowing them to stand a greater chance of promoting, awarding scholarships, and so on. Thus, such amendment should be tabled in order to improve national education system.

On the other hand, learning thoroughly more than eleven subjects is due to put the students under pressure. First, they may cram for the subjects they actually do not perform well. In reality, not all these subjects could be applied to their future job; thus, the time they spend on studying these is absolutely temporary/ trivial. Moreover, human brain is limited; thereby, this leads to adverse effects on students such as depression and hysteria, which will act as an impediment to their studies. As a prime example, Korean is the country where there prevails an exponential suicide rate among teenagers because of the exhaustion stemming from the cramming for entrance exam.

In conclusion, although the application of new testing system has been receiving a great deal of media attention, the merits it brings about is undeniable. However, the corporation should not take it lightly that we need to research more in order to find more feasible solution cutting down the pressure on students.
