In the last year vs. this year

"I have been to Mexico two times in the last year."

"I have been to Mexico two times this year".

What are the differences?

Thanks a lot in advance.

Hi In the last year suggests the year is over, or you are talking about the last 12 months. Two times this year - it is still this year and you might go again.
