Hi,

What is the difference between 'in the last year' and ' last year'?
Which tense should we use with 'in the last year'?The present perfect or the simple past?

(written on 19 July, 2012): Last year - 2011 In the last year - 20 July, 2011 to today. In British English, we are more likely to use the present perfect with 'in the last year', as it is a time period extending up to the present.

Last year - 2011
In the last year - 20 July, 2011 to today.

"in the last year" can also refer to the last of a number of years that are being considered together.
In the last year that I lived there, I only saw him two or three times.
