However, since then, new rules and tests for riders have done a lot to prevent this from happening in the future Tour de France races.

Hi,
There is no "the" before "future" in the above in the original, and I think putting in "the" sounds better. Am I on the right track or not? If not, would you enlighten me? Thanks.

In my view, the sentence is better without "the". "The" is not wrong, and it has the sense of making the future races seem more definite.
