In the forefront of...

(The astronomy) is the oldest (science), but it (continues) to be (at) the forefront of scientific thought.

The answer they give me is A, because astronomy is a subject, and subject cannot be with the definite article.

But I think choice D also has some problem. I ever heard of 'in the forefront of', but, search me! I never ever heard of "at the forefront of". So I wondered if at here is misused.

I think "in the forefront" is OK, but "at the forefront" suggests that it is at the absolute front, which makes more sense in this kind of sentence.
