'in the field'?

Hi,

Please have a look at this:

You should set up an intranet and create executive pages accesible only to senior managers. One person should be responsible for posting on the executive intranet pages the latest sales intelligence gathered in the field as well as the changing prices of critical input such as raw materials. You cannot afford to wait for the posting however. Arrange instead for a daily half-hour conference call to check in with your sales and marketing people

What does 'in the field' here mean? Does it mean 'the field of sales'?

What about 'conference call' and 'check in with' (I think if they are in the same company, there's no need for calling; they can meet in person, right?)

Many thanks,

Nessie.

'In the field means' out in the world rather than through books and other research. For instance, in architecture, we will say, "I made a change in the field". This means that I was physically at the building and made a change there rather than back at my office.

  • You can 'check in with' your own company.

Hi,

(I think if they are in the same company, there's no need for calling; they can meet in person, right?)

The writer obvously thinks they can't. Perhaps, for example, it's a huge international company.

Thank you very much, Cwtch and Clive Emotion: smile

But could you please be more specific about 'check in with'? What does it mean?

To 'check in with' means to make contact. This could be by phone or email, carrier pigeon or any other means of communication.
