In the end/At the end

Hi,

I just encountered the following sentence in a textbook and wonder whether "in the end" or "at the end" or either of them is possible, and why?

"In the end, all political ideologies boil down to the same thing."

Any guide would be highly appreciated.

Regards,

Iman

No, I mean what I said. You cannot say: He became happy at the end.

You can say: at the end of the week, at the end of the year, at the end of the lesson etc.
