In the end vs Finally

I had to jump start the car, but ______ he got it going

a) in the end

b) Finally

My book said that I could only choose Finally, without any explanation, so I wondered why we couldn't put " In the end" into the sentence?

finally seems more formal, but in the end doesn't seem incorrect. What's stranger is the shift from I to he . CJ

I think : finally = End all . The sentences above mean after all we try to start my car, end of these trying , the car had started.

Sorry, it must be

I jump-start the car,but______I got it start

a) in the end

b) finally

So do I, I don't see any differences here. Yet I think in the end cannot be put in the mid- position, can it?
