Houses in the downtown/uptown area are usually quite expensive.

Downtown is the area where the majority of businesses are. Uptown isn't used very often, some places use it, like New York, which means the northern part of the island. (north of 59th street according to a web search) In New York, I believe downtown is the area around Broadway (near Times Square)
