No real reason. Articles are mysterious little things. Maybe it's because we have the word "darkness" for that, and "dark" therefore sounds odd: "I can't see in total darkness."

"dark" is an adjective. I imagine that historically we added "the" to "dark" when we wanted to use it as a noun, but this is a guess. I make this guess because adjectives like "rich" and "poor" are treated the same way. "the rich" and "the poor" refer to rich people and poor peop
