John assisted Kate in the creation of the Church choir.

John assisted Kate in creating the Church choir.

John assisted Kate to create the Church choir.

Do all of these mean the exact same thing? Please could you explain the different verb conjugations here?

I'm writing an academic piece of work with a small word count, and while the first version probably sounds more academic, I've used the second version instead as a means to erase useless 'of' and also 'that' in my writing.

Is this a good thing to do?

Then say simply "John helped Kate create the church choir."

No need to capitalize "church."
