In the corresponding months

The number of custodial deaths during the last six months since January this year has exceeded well over 200 and this figure does not include the deaths in so-called "encounters". In the corresponding months last year the number of similar deaths were 132.

Are there any mistakes? Can the "has" in the first sentence be taken out without affecting the meaning?
