In the beginning; really

"Of course, I had a mum in the beginning but she died when I was really small."

Should it not have been "at the beginning" instead of "in the beginning"?

Would you please explain the use of "really" for this sentence?

Thanks.

"In the beginning" is correct in the given sentence - "at the beginning" would be incorrect in this situation. The meaning is that the speaker had a mom when he was an infant (but "of course" he did; everyone had a mom when he was an infant). "Really small" means at a very young age, say, under the age of three.
