In (the) apearance or in (th)physical appearance

Hello everyone,

A/Are "in (the)appearance" and "in (the) physical appearance" correct in the following sentences?

1. Males and females are different in (the) appearance.

2. Males and females are different in (the) physical appearance.

B/ Is "the" optional in both sentences? Or is it wrong?
