In that

Hi

I come across the phrase "in that" many sentences (see examples below). I'm not sure what it actually means. Can anyone explain what it means or is it tied to certain words?

A is different from B in that A is....

A differs from B in that A...

A will not meet the criteria in that A is...

A is helpless in that A is...
