in support of

Hello,

Could anyone teach me the accurate meaning of "in support of" in following sentences:

[1]Religious liberals have been politically active in support of gay rights and against nuclear weapons and the death penalty. [from NY Times]
[2]In 1998 she [Rosa Parks] spent five days in Nova Scotia in support of the program.[from NY Times]
[3]The Union has acquiescend to the predudices of its members in support of an alien tax on immigrant workers.

They are the same? I guess "in support of" means that "in order to support". Am I right?

Thanks

I am still not clear its meaning.

Do you mean it is to introduce an action that is simultanesous with the action of the main clause? Or it means "by supporting".

Thanks.

Thanks a lot.

According to your explaination, "in support of" will not mean " in order to support". But in example [2], the use of "supporting" makes me a little bit confusing. To me, "in order to suport" is much clear in meaning than "supporting". So in that example, "in support of" just means Rosa parks spented five days there while supporing the program?
