The modern world has witnessed a growing number of youngsters having a gap year to travel or work. Although there are merits of this phenomenon, particularly experience accumulation, the demerits including being behind other students may create a great concern among those learners, which will be elaborated in this essay.

On the one hand, it is conceivable that spending a term off may benefit the undergraduates themselves. One beneficial aspect is that students having a gap year to travel are likely to acquire social knowledge apart from school. To be specific, when they allow themselves to go overseas or travel around the country, they are likely to gain an insight into the local culture and regional tradition, which is a lesson for them to utilize in their life. For instance, when students decide to have a year off to go to Japan for tourism, they have a chance to learn how to adapt to the greeting technique of the residents, which then they may apply when they return to their nation.

On the other hand, being behind other partners is a major detrimental effect that a gap period may bring to those learners. Specifically, after having experienced the work in the community for a term, when these undergraduates get back to school, they may face differences in their classes since they have focused on their work too much that they forgot the knowledge in their previous classes. For instance, after working as a waiter at a restaurant for one year, the student who had been involved must catch up with the class’s learning progress as he can just recall his experience in the restaurant but not his comprehension when he studied at the high school.

In conclusion, despite having a favorable time in the community to acquire social knowledge and experience, students may find difficulties in integrating with classmates as well as catching up with the class’s studying progress.
