Hi Mister Micawber,

Recently I encountered a sentence (from a book) like:

"X will raise the price of Y...only in so far as and as long as Z's price stays the same".

Could you help me in explaining what only in so far as and as long as means here?

I'm so confused...

Hi, sdylan- and welcome to English Forums.

As I said in my earlier post, they have slightly different meanings and so can be used together occasionally, as in your example.

In your example, 'insofar as' simply means 'if': If Z's price stays the same, and as long as (= for as much time as) Z's price stays the same, X will set a new, higher price for Y.
