Because of the lucrative but illegal trade in rhinoceros horns.

Why the prepositon is " in " ? is it idiomatic ? lucrative trade in rhinoceros horns ?

We say 'the trade in' whatever. Prepositions can be awkward things and it is hard to find any rules - you just have to learn which is appropriate in each situation I'm afraid.
