Is this rant correct? I would like to know whether 'in relation to' is what I should have used?
The movie keeps going back in forth between present pas and future. When it does it say 'One year later' Sometimes it leaves you wondering 'one yeqr lqter in relqtion to what'.

"one year later in relation to what?" is fine, but it's easier to say "one year later than what?"
