In regard to as ...as

it is no longer as tempting to see language as an insidious shaper of thought, and, we shall see, it is not.

fish could just as sensibly be spelled ghoti (gh as in tough, o as in women, ti as in nation)

I want to know why the second as in structure of "as adv. as ..." can be omitted in the above sentences.
