In public or On public?

Which one is correct: on public or in public?
If they are different, can anyone explain the different use?
Thanks

Hi enmoo, It's always best to give us a full sentence. " Here, it's "on diplay" and public modifies what type of display.

Hi enmoo,

It's always best to give us a full sentence.

Usually you would say something happened "in public."

However, phrases like "The picture goes on public display for the first time since the late 1800s at the X museum next month." Here, it's "on diplay" and public modifies what type of display.
