Vocabulary

in progress/go on/continue

Hello,
Can we say: "After twenty years of constant battles the war was still in progress/was still going on/continued."? For some reason I think that "in progress" and "go on" don't suit the context. I am open to suggestions. I was thinking of "rage on".

The war started in year 1205 AD and after twenty years of constant battles it was still in progress/going on/still continued. Doesn't "go on" make the sentence sound a little odd?
