In Production

If an object is "in production", it means the said object is being manufactured. If it is "sent into production", then it is starting to be manufactured. But then, in this article:

http://shine.yahoo.com/healthy-living/the-royal-baby-effect--how-one-kid-could-make-u-k---380-million-richer-220729594.html
"British designer Sophie Allport created two potential designs for a commemorative mug to celebrate the royal birth—but will wait until the actual event to send one into production."

As written, the passage seems to suggest that copies of the selected design will be manufactured, instead of copies of the mug that is based on the selected design. Would the following rewrite be better?

"...wait until the actual event to send the mug based on one design into production"

The mug produced won't be based on the selected design, it will be the selected design. There is no ambiguity, and the sentence is correct as written.

A mug is not a design. And a design is the way the mug is colored, shaped, sized, etc.... A design is certainly not a mug. Or am I misunderstanding something?

I beg to differ. The design certainly can include the style, shape, size, color and material.

All I can tell you is that we don't say things are based on a design unless they are derivative of but distinct from a particular design. The design is going into production (rather than mugs based on the design going into production) because it is a coffee mug design, not simply a design being adapted to a coffee mug.

How about this one:

"...wait until the actual event to send the mug of one design into production."
