In order ???? OPTIONAL??

Could you please help correct these sentences? Are the IN ORDERS optional?

I had some help from a friend (in order) to finish in time.

I paid him (in order) to make it look like I was better at basketball than he was (in order) to impress my girlfriend.

Thank you

So in sentence one, its optional and in sentence 2 the last one has to be left in, but doesn't it sound weird with 2 in orders? would you leave out the first one?

Mister micawber; can you say the bold bit, does it make sense to say "has to be left in"

thank you
