My non-native English speaking friends and I have a lot of troubling using the correct prepositions when we refer to these nouns in our daily conversations.
(1) in/on the dish
(2) in/on the tray
(3) in/on the soccer field
(4) in/on the basketball court
(5) in/on the food court
This is what we think. We use "on" for (1) to (4) because, for example, food is ON the surface of a dish/tray. Players play ON the surface of a court. In (5), we think in is correct because it's IN a shopping court.
What is your opinion? Thanks.
'On' a two-dimensional space. 'In' a three-dimensional space. However, sometimes it is an option in the mind of the beholder.
