what is the differnce between sit in the chair* and *sit on the chair?
And between lie in the bed and *lie on the bed?

If it's an easy chair, I would say sit in the chair. If it isn't, I would say sit on the chair. I would avoid in the bed, but: I lay in bed all morning.

I would avoid in the bed, but:

I lay in bed all morning.
= under the blanket, probably wearing pyjamas
