In or on

Hi everyone. Should I say "the leaves on the trees" or "the leaves in the trees?" At first I used "on," then I thought it should be "in."

Thanks.

The birds are nesting in the trees. It's late in the fall, and the leaves have not dropped yet. The leaves are staying on the trees longer than usual this year.
