It also depends on whether you want British English or American English.

For example, there were a lot of children in or on the street?

There were many children on the street. (American English - can mean that there were many homeless children. "Living on the street" is an euphemism for being homeless.)

There were many children in the street. (Children playing - usually ball games - using the street for a playing field)
