"in" or "on"?

We know that when we mention a certain day's evening or morning, we should say "on the evening of...etc.. But what about the sentence,"He came here ___ the evening when we finished the task"? "in" or "on" should be used here? Thanks.

I would use on but I think some others might say in. This seems a borderline case to me. The subordinate clause affects or modifies the evening and normally when that happens, the preposition
