Hi teachers,

I heard it from TV but not sure I heard it right.

Hi guys,

It is quite common to say, "work an overnight shift", without 'in' or 'on'.

That said, I am confused by the meaning. Is the point that the father only had to work one night? Or is it that the only night available for something else (his children could come visit, his wife was available to go out), he had to work an overnight shift?

In the US, some high volume factories operate 24/7. The shifts basically start 7am 3:30pm , 3:00 pm 11:30pm and 11:00 pm to 7:am. Each shift has a 30 minute overlap with thte incoming shift and it is 8 hours with 30 minutes lunch break and two 15 minutes "coffee breaks" provided by the employer. We call the 11:00pm - 7:30 shift "graveyard shift" of simply "grave shift". I've never heard
