In life or in his/their life

(1) During the difficult times in (his) life, he received a lot of help from his friends.

(2) They fought hard against the challenges in (their) life.

My non-native English speaking friends and I think it's wrong to use the possessive pronouns.

Do you need them? Thanks a lot.
