In lieu of

Hi.
I am going to ask about the phrase in lieu of. Dictionaries suggest that it is an archaic alternative for instead of.
But interestingly, my American professor used it in his lecture notes.
I wonder if native speakers tell me whether this word is still in use.

Hello hrsanei, Yes, it is still in use but I hear and see it less and less. It's a nice expression, but less common than it was 30 years ago. John

Yes, it is still in use but I hear and see it less and less. It's a nice expression, but less common than it was 30 years ago.
