In Late May

Hello,

I usually say something like; "I'm going back home in late May." And, I think most people speak this way too. But, I was told by a friend of mine that "I'm going back home late in May." is more grammatically correct. Yet, when he speaks, he says, "I'm going back home in late May."

Can someone please tell me how I should take it?

in late May and late in May are equally correct grammatically. late is an adjective in the first case; an adverb in the other. As far as grammar is concerned I don't see how one can be "more correct" than the other.
