Which one of the following sentences the most appropriate and why?



1. I went into the file and deleted the chart.



2. I went in the file and deleted the chart.



3. I went inside the file and deleted the chart.

I got confused with respect to 'go into' because, I remember reading somewhere, that 'into' or 'onto' is used when there is physical movement. For example, as in 'jumped into the water'.

I see. Well, it turns out that the figurative movement "into a file" can use the same preposition even though it's not physical movement.
