in hot water

"I managed to get myself in really hot water after I put up a picture of my boss's daughter on my desk."

After I read the sentence above, I wondered why he got himself in trouble. Did I get this sentence wrong?

You had it right. In hot water means in trouble . Presumably the boss didn't like the idea of the speaker dating his/her daughter.

But why did he intend to do so? He said he "managed to"?

Managed to means did or succeeded in doing. It does not always indicate that the speaker intended to do what he did.

She managed to scrape her knuckles and tear her shirt while trying to undo the bolt. (presumably unintentionally)
