Thank you, Rover.

Glasgow Rangers have opened talks with Maurice Edu’s agent in hope of extending the American midfielder’s stay with the defending Scottish Premier League champion.

Would "in the hope of" or "in hopes of," not in hope of, be correct?

Hi,

Generally speaking, it's a matter of writing style. The idiom in hope of is correct. I agree we often see

the definite article before hope (in the hope of), but it is commonly elided, particularly in newspapers.

Also, these are considered correct and idiomatic: in the hope of, in the hope that, in hopes that,

in hopes of, with hopes of,

Newspaper headlines - especially sport and entertainment headlines- are the worst possible source for good grammar and usage. Don't waste valuable time on trying to figure out what the editors of these newspapers are doing to the English language.

Hi,

I would avoid generalization in this matter. The idiom in (the) hope of is OK, and is not considered bad
