in honor of...

Please help me with the following passage.

.....
.....
Donor Name: Tatsuo Fujioka
In honor of: Akiko Fujioka
Donation amount: 11,000 Yen
Payment Type: Online donation
Received: April 8, 2008

What does "in honor of" mean? Does it mean someone to be respected? Then why is Akiko respected? Please advise.

it usually means you are doing something in the memory of someone who has died. In this case, it seems to be a relative.

Thank you, but I am still a bit confused.

Tastuo donated money to a charity. He did this in memory of Akiko. The charity has nothing to do with Akiko, does it? Please kindly help on this again. Thank you very much.

Often, donors to charity will do this to recognize someone else (who might be dead), even if the other person is not related to the charity. It doesn't serve a purpose except to publicize the deceased person's name. I guess this is one way charities try to get donations by offering the chance of publicizing a name of the donor's choice.
